Canadian Thanksgiving

January 1st, 2002

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.

Harvest celebrations have been around a long time. Ever since the very first harvest, about 2,000 years ago, people have given thanks for a prosperous bounty. The first formal Canadian Thanksgiving was held just over 40 years prior to the pilgrims landing in Massachusetts. An English explorer named Martin Frobisher had been trying to find a northern passage to the Orient. He did not succeed but he did establish a settlement in Northern America and he did celebrate a harvest feast. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving.

In 1957, Parliament announced that on the second Monday in October that Thanksgiving would be “a day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”

During the American Revolution, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings such as the cornucopia and the pumpkin pie. According to one Canadian resource the Canadian table usually features venison and waterfowl over turkey. However, a professor from Durham College tells us that in Southern Ontario eating waterfowl or venison at Thanksgiving has never happened and that the turkey or/and ham is the featured food. Conversely, Lee adamantly states that when he was young “wild duck/goose was always served for Thanksgiving and, if they were fortunate venison as well! This was a common practice in that area at that time.”

Other People’s Pages (OPP)

January 1st, 2002

What did ya think it was gonna be? These are links to Other People’s Pages that I thought were cool but don’t really fit into the other categories. If you find a bizarre or wild site you think I should link to, email me and I’ll take a look. We’ll see what we can do.

  • whitewomanblackdog - Here’s my bother-in-law’s home page. It’s kinda wierd, kinda strange, kinda different, but pretty cool.
  • SpencerKimmel.com - looking for some art, here is a [previously] local “starving artist” (yeah, right). Has some good stuff so take a look.
  • The Pig Pen- Check out the NEW Pigpen, home of the one and only infamous PIGMAN. He finally got his own domain name so now there are no rules. And yes he named me but he’s not my father. TRUST me.
  • Linux Punks - the blog of a buddy at work who is knowledgable on most things computer related.
  • breaman.net - a friend of mine has a new domain name. Mostly computer programming related.
  • Buff Wear - no it’s not a porn site, it’s those funny things they wear on their heads in Survivor. They have a huge selection of colors and styles. I have a few myself, great for outdoor sports or yard work. The guy who owns the place is way cool too.

Welcome

January 1st, 2002

Welcome to eddiecanuck.com!!!
The Eddie stands for Eddie Munster (which has since migrated to Eddie Canuck), it’s a handle I’ve picked up at work from some PIG and it’s just stuck. No I am not the real Eddie Munster nor do I claim to be. I’m just a simple Canadian living amongst the Americans in harmony (surprise) or at least as close to harmony as possible.

If you want to check out the REAL Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) click the sign.

This place has changed over the years, from the whole “free” website hosting, to my own domain, to the weblog format. Gotta keep up with the times, and this seemed to be the most logical format for what I put up here. Anyway, I’m looking for new ideas to make this a fun place to visit and hopefully drum up some business. Don’t worry, I’m not looking to put ads on here and make money. I just want to see that counter go up from more than just me editing the damn page. So if you have any ideas let me know, I’m going to be busy trying to figure out how to get my site out there for people to know about. It seems to be somewhat working as my stats page is showing significant traffic.

Mostly I have stuff that amuses me or is related to the homeland. All posts are on the main page, and archived articles and links are on the left side of the main page. The articles are listed in descending order (that’s newest at the top, and oldest at the bottom), that’s just the way I like it so deal with it.

The only rule I have is DON’T LINK DIRECTLY TO PICTURES ON MY SITE!! If you like a picture, do the old right click and save as and put it on your own server. I’ll note if a graphic is something I have created and don’t want pilfered. I have no problem with you putting a text link to a picture, but don’t put it in a forum or anywhere else as an image link. Otherwise my bandwidth gets used everytime someone views that page, whether they wanted to see the picture or not. Okay, rant over.

If there is something you want to see, let me know, otherwise hope you like it.

Humor

January 1st, 2002

So here is the “meat and potatos” of my site, the humor section. This seems to be what most of you who find me come to look at. BE WARNED though, some stuff may not appeal to the weak of heart or young of mind (and body). I’ll do my best to label things as such, but hey I ain’t your parent or your government so learn to take care of yourself and your family. It’s up to you to police yourself and your kids.
Okay that’s enough of a warning/disclaimer for me. On to the good stuff.

  • Here is another one from the Foundry Music site, it’s a reporter trying to keep his composure while reporting about a “felching” incident gone terrible wrong. Not sure if this is an actual radio report or not, but the incident itself is merely urban legend. Still funny. - armageddon.mp3 (819K)
  • Got this one in an email with the subject line: “water retention”, made me laugh - WaterRetention.jpg (28K)
